Congratulations to our NEW ZONAL REFEREES!
Kim Wishum, Harry Walker, DJ Wiles, Duane Holben, and Daniel Paula all passed their Zonal Certification course in Clearwater Beach, FL at a Dig the Beach event a few weeks ago. Congratulations to each of them for their fine work!
There are also some opportunities to work at a Professional Beach event again this summer/fall for some. IMG, the AVP and the NVL will all be hosting a variety of events around the country. We will also be hosting an FIVB World Tour Grand Slam event in conjunction with the World Series of Beach Volleyball in Long Beach, CA starting 22 Jul – 28 Jul. So come out and be a part of this extravaganza.
The 2013 Collegiate Sand season was a great success. In just its second year, the emerging sport has drawn some 32 schools into competition, and has hosted its second National Championship. With another dozen new schools verbally committed to joining the sport in 2014, collegiate doubles seems likely to become a full NCAA Championship sport, perhaps as early as 2016! The Beach Commission is proud to have helped this exciting sport get its start through the use of experienced certified beach officials!
CBS filmed the Collegiate Championship event the first week in May in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Competition was played in two formats: In "TEAM" competition, each school brings five doubles teams to bear against its opponent school. The school that wins the majority of the matches, wins the "Dual Team Competition”. This year LBSU defeated Pepperdine 3-2 to win the Team Competition. In the PAIRS competition, each doubles team competes on its own against every other team in the field in an attempt to take top honors. The team of Burnham/Robinson USC defeated Roenicke/Ledoux LBSU 2-0 to take the “Pairs Championship Title”. These Championships were aired on CBS in late May. Congratulations to all participants!
Break-out the sunblock & some shades and meet us on the BEACH!
